NEIL, A REGULAR homeless visitor to the Coventry Jesus Centre, was nick-named "Celebrity" after he officially opened the Jesus Centre in 2002. He died in tragic circumstances, in January 2008. The Jesus Centre team led his funeral.
His death caused the team to remember, yet again, all those who have been lost to the desperate conditions of life at the bottom end of society.
A few months after Neil's funeral, a "Vigil for the Forgotten People" was held at the Jesus Centre for visitors who have died since the centre opened (see the BBC report).
People were invited, through the media, to come and pay their respects, and to bring any information about the people that could be passed to families.
One woman, who read about the vigil in the local paper, was shocked to see the name of a man who had passed away. She had been married to him 14 years ago and had no idea that he had died. She phoned the centre and was able to talk about how stunned she felt and of her memories of her ex-husband.
The Jesus Centre now keeps a Book of Remembrance for the 'forgotten people'.
