Steen and Susanne are Danish. They came to England from the island of Funen in the south of Denmark.
Susanne says, "We sold everything we had because we wanted to have a new start. We had a small farm and we went bankrupt."
Their final destination was to be Ireland because Steen, who is a carpenter had a job lined up for him.
But the night Steen and Susanne arrived in Harwich, England, utterly exhausted, they crashed out to sleep in their tent and during the night their bag with all their money and belongings was stolen!
So they had to walk, and walk. They walked to Colchester, and from Colchester to London. In London, a man gave them a lift for ten miles and recommended they walk north, along the towpath of the Grand Union Canal.
Susanne continues, "In London we sold everything we had left and pawned our wedding rings. We walked through Yardley Gobion (near Northampton) where the village was celebrating with a brass band and other festivities.
We walked on to Bugbrooke and went to the pub, soaking wet. The pub manager gave us mugs of tea and phoned the Jesus Centre in Northampton as he knew they would help us. His wife gave us a big bag of food with bacon, sausages, bread and so on, but that night it rained again so we could not light a fire to cook the food. We were so hungry we ate the uncooked bacon and sausages. Then we walked to the Jesus Centre where we were warmly greeted by Polly."
Polly directed them to the Jesus Fellowship's 'Trumpet House' where they stayed a few days had their first bath for two weeks!
