Peace Parlour: The Sheffield Cafe

“I’M THE Café Co-ordinator. I find it such a joy working in a lovely peaceful environment with great volunteers. We have many regular customers who come into the cafe to enjoy a delicious meal in a relaxed atmosphere.
“Some of the customers give us great feedback, saying: ‘It is like heaven coming here,’ and ‘The service is very friendly’. It’s encouraging to hear, as this is our aim, to create a place that is friendly and relaxed. We also want it to be a place people can come, make friends and have a chat to someone if they would like to.

Success in Sheffield

The Sheffield Jesus Centre were treated to an amazing set of statistics about their first 12 weeks of operating: 188 different people have come to the Centre’s activities (including art groups, a drop-in for the homeless and a café).
They have 25 visitors per day and the number is increasing, as are the services they’re running.
They enjoyed a Gala Day not long after opening, complete with face-painting, book and cake stalls and a visit from the Lord Mayor.
Jesus Centres are now open in London, Coventry, Northampton and Sheffield.

Full steam ahead

WORK steams ahead on the Sheffield Jesus Centre!
Despite a number of setbacks and delays (the snow over Christmas included), the contractors should be handing over the completed site to the local congregation at the beginning of June. Then it will be all hands on deck for setting up and arranging desks and office chairs, wheeling in filing cabinets, stocking up the freezers for the café, making sure there’s an adequate supply of paper clips on the help desk and so on.
The excitement is growing, and people are seeing where they fit in, and getting creative with ideas for services to offer. More importantly though, we’re allowing it to intrude on our lives and we're being a bit inconvenienced by it all...
