Coventry: Servant of all: The benefits of volunteering
What are the benefits of volunteering in a Jesus Centre? Edmund Kannu shares his experience.Published: 23rd Aug 2013
“VOLUNTEERING at the Jesus Centre has been very beneficial to my personal life.” says Edmund Kannu, “It has helped me to become more humble by serving others. In Africa, if you are a church leader you are to be served rather than to serve. At the Jesus Centre we learn to serve and reach out to others with a humble heart.”
Edmund, 45, has been a volunteer in the Bridge drop-in at Coventry Jesus Centre since 2010. Here destitute, homeless and often lonely people can come inside for some warmth, a shower and a free breakfast. There is also an on-site clothing bank, used much in cold weather, and a weekly food distribution point.
Born and brought up in Sierra Leone, Edmund was the son of a Muslim mother...

Coventry: Seven Stories of Forgotten People
Julia Faire puts us in the shoes of seven visitors to the Coventry Jesus Centre.Published: 29th Apr 2013
THESE ARE hard times for the poor. Not many would argue with that. UK Government austerity measures have meant that increasing numbers of people are unable to make ends meet. Food banks are busier than ever (according to an article in the Guardian, three open every week) and recent headlines reveal that child poverty is again on the increase. Over 6 million people are unemployed or underemployed and benefits and the minimum wage rates are falling well behind that of inflation. Key charities are struggling financially, leaving some of our most vulnerable citizens badly in need of support.
At Coventry Jesus Centre ‘The Bridge’ drop-in is open five mornings a week: free breakfasts, showers and clothes are provided and... Comments Read more on the Coventry Jesus Centre site » -
Coventry: Painting by numbers
Who said “church” was just a Sunday thing? Coventry Jesus Centre manager, Piers Young paints a picture of a busy Friday at the Jesus Centre.Published: 26th Sep 2012
I COULDN’T help being impressed by how much went on here last Friday.
Julia, our skills tutor, ran a new “The Bible and You” class in the Bridge drop-in lounge with a keen group. It’s a group that combines teaching literacy with exploring the Bible.
“Little Ark” mums and tots converted the Gateway hall into a big play room with pushalong toys, craft activities, and chatting mums filling the space.
Reception dealt with a stream of enquiries. Support workers plied their trade of mercy.
Iain, who runs our self-development and confidence building activities under the banner “Your Future”, took some people to Ryton Pools to do conservation work.
The “...

Coventry: A case of changed identity
Laurence Cooper tells the story of two changed lives and a kitchen sink.Published: 24th Sep 2010MY FRIEND Dave works in the kitchen at one of our Jesus Centres. When he’s not making breakfasts for the many homeless and disadvantaged people who come into the centre, Dave is also their sometime counsellor, occasional medic and – always – their good friend.
But Dave didn’t always do this sort of thing. At one time he had a very different sort of job. Some years back he was an altogether different kind of character.
A few months ago a chap called Will came to work with Dave, helping him to cook, wash up and generally run the busy kitchen. Will is a Christian, interested in the work of the Jesus Centre, wanting to play his part.
Dave had a funny feeling that he knew Will, but couldn...

Coventry: The rough with the smooth
Coventry Jesus Centre manager, Piers Young on the highs and lows of life serving Jesus on the front line.Published: 11th May 2010
THE ROUGH
Incident report, 10 March. People involved: Visitor A (let’s call him Alf); Visitor B (let’s call him Bill); Rob (staff); Anne-Marie (volunteer receptionist).
What happened: Alf was using a PC. He went to the toilet and Bill sat down at the PC and started using it. Alf came back and complained. Bill answered back; an argument ensued. Both went to the reception window and carried on and Anne-Marie was a bit freaked out.
Rob was nearby and he said to Bill, “You didn’t book in for the PC and you haven’t given your name”. Bill said “You know my name.” Rob said, “You haven't given your name.” Bill became abusive (F-words and so on) and went out. Then he...
