London: Silver Sunday
Published: 23rd Oct 2015
ACCORDING to a recent report, more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. In response to this, the ‘Silver Sunday’ initiative was launched in 2012, by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Councillor Christabel Flight. It’s an annual day that provides free activities across the UK for elderly people. The aim is to celebrate older residents and to help them get out and about and meet new people.
The first ‘Silver Sunday’ in 2012 was a fantastic success, with over 2000 people taking part in 19 events in Westminster alone. It gained the support of Joanna Lumley, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Michael Parkinson. The following year then saw ‘Silver Sunday’ go national...

Northampton: Art in the right place
Northampton Jesus Centre exhibited some of the paintings of Christian artist Ulrike O'Flaherty. Her deeply evocative artwork meditates on God's love towards the marginalised. Like the Jesus Centre vision, Ulrike's art expresses how Jesus can heal and dignify the poor.Published: 21st May 2008
ULRIKE O'Flaherty's striking, "in your face" artwork has things to say about God's love towards the marginalised and poor.
The themes explored in her powerful paintings tie in well with the Jesus Centre vision to be "a place of friendship and help for every type of person".
Ulrike talks about what has influenced her work:
We were working in Naples with prostitutes and homeless people who slept rough underneath the train stations. I found myself unable to say 'bye bye' and leave them to sleep in their cardboard boxes while we went back to our snugly beds, so we began to have people living with us and called it 'Casa Familia'. God...

Coventry: Live at the Well
As they approach their second anniversary the Coventry Jesus Centre team are experimenting with new ideas to reach more people.Published: 24th Jan 2005
"HOW CAN we reach ordinary young people in town with something at the Jesus Centre?" That was the question. The answer was to organise 'Live at the Well', a regular Friday night live music event in the Centre's Upper Well Cafe.
"We drew on the talents in our local congregation and the wider church," explains Jesus Centre manager Piers Young. "First there was a lot to do to upgrade the cafe itself and we travelled as far as Cambridgeshire for new (second hand) tables, redecorated, hung novel instruments up, bought an ice cream freezer, moved lights etc. At the same time we worked on the menu, asking Centre visitors for their foodback (feedback) which included milk shakes and new snacks and...
