Coventry: Giving something back
Volunteer Julia helps in the Jesus Centre kitchen one morning a week serving visitors with beans on toast and constantly replenishing the milk, squash, tea bags, coffee, sugar, bread and fruit, plus doing loads of washing up. She talks about what made her start volunteering.Published: 14th Jun 2017“I HEARD about the need for volunteers at the Coventry Jesus Centre through the priest at my own church and thought that now I have left work, I would like to get involved. Sue Withers tells the story of Satoko, a visitor to the London Jesus Centre.Published: 22nd Feb 2017
THIS Christmas, among the Christmas messages, I had an unusual one from Japan:
“Dear Sue,
I got baptized this morning…on Christmas morning!

HOWA* arrived in this country with no English at all, she comes from Togo and can speak fluent French. Being a very strong character, she felt frustrated at not being as good as everyone else at English and didn’t attend for a while. Six months later, she returned, much more resolute and learned to speak English very quickly – she now knows more than enough to get by and has started to translate for others in her church. She says that she loves to come to the Jesus Centre, because we treat her with respect. Little does she know how much ‘life’ she brings to us!
Tara came to us from a project that supports women who have been ‘...
